Picture Perfect Park…

6:30am. 67ºF. Low humidity.  The sun peeking over the buildings of Manhattan’s east side.  Makes for a picture perfect morning for a walk in Central Park.

Manhattanhenge

2012 UPDATE:  For 2012, the “Manhattanhenge” dates are Tuesday, May 29 at 8:17 pm; Wednesday, May 30 at 8:16 pm… and for the return trip Wednesday, July 11 at 8:24 pm; Thursday, July 12 at 8:25 pm.

______________________

Twice a year, New Yorkers get a chance to experience “Manhattanhenge”, the recurring solar event where the setting sun aligns perfectly with Manhattan’s east-west streets. If you missed it don’t worry, a second date this year is expected to take place on Monday, July 11 through Wednesday, July 13 at around 8:25 p.m. each evening.

The term is derived from Stonehenge in the UK, where the sun aligns with the huge circular formation of stones on the solstices. The “Manhattanhenge” name was popularized in 2002 by Neil deGrasse Tyson, an astrophysicist at the American Museum of Natural History.

This shot was taken tonight, May 31, 2011 at 8:10pm EDT looking west down 72nd Street.  That’s New Jersey just below the sun.

Inspiration from the heavens via Norwegian photographer…

Aurora Video from Terje Sorgjerd

Norwegian photographer Terje Sorgjerd recently published some inspirational videos on his Vimeo page that are now going viral.  Two standouts for me were his works titled “The Mountain” and “The Aurora.”  These amazingly beautiful videos were both shot with an HD DSLR camera.

Florida Beach Shoot with Sergio Chang…

I had the pleasure of working with Orlando-based model Sergio Chang over the first weekend of April.  We met in Cocoa Beach, Florida to concentrate on beach shoots to show off his hard work on his body.  Sergio has been hitting the gym hard since last fall.  With the help of a trainer/nutritionist, his hard work has paid off as evident in these before and after shots.

Since we were on the east coast of Florida, it meant some early morning to catch that golden hour of sunrise-infused light, but I think the results were worth the early morning hours.  Sergio was a blast to work with on the shoots.  We did a series of mini-shoots (about an hour or two each) which let us hit multiple locations without getting to run down by a long shoot.

Early Morning Beach Shoots…

You’ve gotta love the results of shooting during that golden hour the first thing in the morning, but for us non-morning people… could we schedule sunrise around noon?  :-)

Super Bowl Behind The Scenes with Sports Illustrated

A behind the scenes look at the Sport Illustrated’s photography team and their coverage of this year’s Super Bowl.

Reminds me of when I was freelancing with the Associated Press during college and worked during the 1980 World Series between the Royals and Phillies. I was assigned to the on-site darkroom processing hundreds of rolls of pushed Tri-X black and white film. Then the AP photo editors would select the best shots from the negatives and print them up to be transmitted on the AP wire. I remember being awestruck by the number of rolls of film we processed in the three nights that the Series was in Kansas City. I can’t imagine processing over 11,000 digital images an hour as explained in the video below by the SI guys.

Teen Actor Trevor Teichmann’s IMDb Profile Photo

November 6 2011 update below…

A very wise man at KAKE-TV named Larry Hatteberg once told me to ‘bank on the small successes’.  Seeing one of my photos on young actor Trevor Teichmann’s IMDb page this week made me smile.  A small success on the road to something bigger.  Trevor’s Mom let me know that she updated Trevor’s page with one of my photos.

I shot with Trevor late last year in a test for Colby Models.  Trevor’s career has been taking off over the last year.  Check him out in the award-winning Porcelain Unicorn short film… and here’s the trailer from the film ‘Allegiance’ to be released in 2011.

November 6 2011 Update

From Christy Teichmann (Trevor’s Mom)…

Hi Michael,

I changed Trevor’s Pic again to yours and we immediately got called for a feature film!! And he got asked for 2 more! So lets get together and do some more please.

Trevor in the green Cal Jacket with his hands swept through his hair on Actor’s Access .com. WoW did it get attention!!! I also have now changed it on IMDB.com as well. Actors access is the site the agents use for their clients.

Can’t wait what happens with this shoot Michael.

Thought you might want to know how your photos are changing a young man’s life.

Hope to see you soon.

Christy

Greg Johnson Photo Shoot…

I shot with Greg Johnson from Colby Models recently.  It was honestly one of the best shoots I’ve done in the five years I’ve been shooting with models.  Greg walked in the studio.  We chatted about the concepts a bit and then we started shooting.  From the first frame, he absolutely nailed it pose after pose.  There were no ‘bad’ frames.

Greg has some experience under his belt.  He’s been modeling for over five years… first with Empire Model Management and now with Colby Models.  That experience showed on set.

And to top it off… he’s a genuinely nice guy.  Originally from Ohio, his midwest roots came through.
